Introduction to The Bursary Foundation
The Bursary Foundation is a social mobility charity that works with primary schools in disadvantaged areas to identify high potential pupils who we prepare for bursary funded places at leading independent schools.
Information for primary schools
Information for independent schools
We work closely with our independent school partners to really understand which children will most benefit from bursary schemes. These children tend to be academically able, curious and conscientious. We prepare these pupils and their families for exams and assessments, meaning that they too have the opportunity to show and realise their true potential.
For partner primary schools, our programme leads to more informed secondary school choices, increased academic resilience and attainment, and higher aspirations.

Shenara’s story – From Ancoats to LAMDA
Jenny first met Shenara when she was in her Year 3 class in inner-city Manchester. She was bright, articulate, mature and had a talent for acting. Jenny knew that she had the potential to go really far, but also that her chances of securing a really top-quality secondary education were limited. With some encouragement and nudging in the right direction, Shenara was awarded a full bursary at Withington Girls’ School, where her talent for acting was nurtured. She left school in 2024 and started a Foundation course at LAMDA in London. Jenny went on to found The Bursary Foundation so that she could help more children like Shenara to realise their true potential by helping them to access some of the best educational opportunities available to them.
Bolton School
For the past five years, Bolton School has been proud to partner with The Bursary Foundation, on what has now become a key strand of the School’s bursary outreach programme.Â
Their first-rate tutoring programme, combined with the amazing pastoral support they provide to tutees and their families as they undertake the application process and onwards, has meant we have been able to recruit bursary pupils from areas of Salford where previously we had been unable to do so, unlocking ring-fenced, area-specific bursary funding from a supporter as a result.Â
In addition, our collaboration has enhanced the School’s pastoral support programme for bursary recipients significantly, ensuring we are better equipped than ever to put in place the financial, practical and emotional support our bursary pupils need to thrive here.

After studying languages and child development at university, Jenny began teaching in inner City Manchester.
It became apparent that the high potential pupils she taught were unaware of opportunities available to them at nearby selective schools. She began mentoring some of them who were successful in securing bursaries at top independent schools and started The Bursary Foundation in 2018 so that she could help more children to realise their potential. Jenny’s favourite part of running the charity is meeting the young people it supports. She is mum to three children and a Governor at a primary school in Wythenshawe.

Having spent my working life in the charity and education sectors, I have always keenly felt the need to ‘give back’ to the city that I loved as a student. The Bursary Foundation exemplifies my belief that everyone deserves to access the best educational opportunities, and I am incredibly proud to work with such passionate colleagues and such bright, brilliant young people.

Natasha, born and raised in North-West London, was the first in her family to attend university, earning a BA in Sociology from the University of Nottingham.
Experiencing educational challenges firsthand inspired her to join the Teach First Graduate Scheme, where she taught Humanities in West London and earned her PGCE. With over a decade at Teach First building partnerships in disadvantaged communities, Natasha now leads The Bursary Foundation’s expansion in the South, committed to breaking down educational barriers for bright young students.

My teaching career always focused on supporting my pupils to achieve their best, whatever that looked like for them – from the ages of 2 to 16!
The Bursary Foundation is the perfect match for my extensive 11+ tutoring experience and high aspirations for all learners. Helping my pupils to have choices in education otherwise inaccessible to them, to be able to take their own love of learning as far as they can, is an absolute joy and a privilege.

For over 25 years, I have worked as a primary school teacher in a variety of diverse settings.
This experience has fuelled my passion for ensuring that every child has the opportunity to reach their full potential. I became a part of The Bursary Foundation to support these remarkable young people in accessing some of the top educational opportunities in the region. I currently balance my roles as a Year 6 class teacher and a tutor for The Bursary Foundation, both of which are incredibly rewarding.

I became a teacher partly because of my own very positive educational experience. With many years experience in both the state and private sectors I applied to work with the Bursary Foundation and share the knowledge and skills that I have used to help so many children gain places at excellent local secondary school. Raising awareness about opportunities is a large part of what we do and giving children the extra attention and confidence they need to succeed is where the difference is made.

As a qualified primary teacher, I have worked in various primary schools across the Northwest since 2004
I have also had roles alongside this including: Pupil premium Teacher, Visual Impairment Teacher, Inclusion Teacher, Nursery Practitioner and Speech and Language assistant.
I have a passion for supporting children and in particular those who are, for no fault of their own, disadvantaged.
I joined the Bursary Foundation in 2023, as I saw an opportunity to continue to do what I do best; for a wonderful charity, who provide support and educational opportunities for children to grow and develop and have high expectations of what pupils can achieve.

It is a joy to work with children. My experiences – as a Primary school teacher in Manchester and Salford – have shown me the incredible potential children possess, which is why I choose to teach and inspire them.
I focus on building their confidence in tackling questions that may be unfamiliar to them, supporting their overall development.
It is a privilege to play a role in their educational journey. I hope that the seeds we plant during our time together will help them grow and foster a lifelong belief in themselves, ultimately positively impacting their future careers.
